All Rise For The Honorable Perry T. Cook
Eleven-year-old Perry has a rather different family background – he was born and raised by his mom in a minimum security correctional facility. When a new district attorney moves into town, he decides to “help” Perry so has him removed from the prison and placed with foster parents to have a better life, but these events cause pain and conflict for Perry, his mom, and his prison family, and lead Perry on a chase to discover the truth about his mom’s crime to secure her release. This engaging story for grades 5-7 is suitable for a read-aloud, literature circle, or to support Habits of Mind, and can launch discussion of family, love, diversity, acceptance, what makes a person good, and how we make decisions.
