Amazing Grace

Hoffman, M.
Grace loves stories, and when she learns that her class will be performing the play, Peter Pan, she wants to play the lead role. But she is told that Peter Pan is a boy, and she’s a girl, and Peter Pan also isn’t Black. But with the support of her family, Grace is encouraged to go for it and soon learns that she can achieve what she wants, regardless of her race or gender. Complex issues such as racism and gender prejudice are addressed in this contemporary picture book for primary students with the help of vibrant and engaging illustrations. In the classroom, “Amazing Grace” may invite discussions around self-identity and encourage students to reflect on and share a time when they accomplished something they did not think they could achieve.
