American War

El Akkad, O.
The Second American Civil war has broken out over the catastrophic impacts of climate change and Sarat grows up during the horrors of this war. Trapped in a refugee camp for years, she witnesses the atrocities of war, is an easy candidate for radicalization, and ends up killing, being captured and tortured, and when released from prison gets her revenge by undertaking a mission that puts millions at risk. Suitable as a class or literature circle novel, this Canadian dystopian novel can launch discussion of radicalization, polarization, the atrocities of war, dehumanization, nationalism and idealism, civilians in war zones, idolization, and the unexpected effects of one’s actions. Some social considerations noted.
