Amina's Voice
Shy, sixth-grader Amina is a Pakistani-American student facing some struggles — her best friend is a Korean girl who is becoming friends with a girl Amina doesn’t trust and Amina’s uncle, a strict Muslim, is coming to visit. Compounding this, the Islamic Center and mosque are vandalized, but this tragic event brings the community together and helps Amina make peace with her friends and find her own voice to unite everyone. This engaging contemporary novel is suitable for grade 5-7 students who will relate to Amina’s relationship issues. Useful for a read-aloud, independent reading, literature circles, or small group reading, to launch discussion of current/faith/cultural events, and to encourage research and critical thinking.
