Band of Merry Kids, The
Pip, the son of a medieval blanket merchant, idolizes Robin Hood, wishes his father could be more like Robin, and aims to fight injustice himself. While visiting a fair with his father and cousins he makes new friends, witnesses the injustices the poor suffer, has many adventures including a life-saving mission, and learns a secret about his father. This adventurous coming-of-age novel for grades 4-6 is suited to a class read-aloud, literature circle, independent reading, and library addition, encourages students to think about the human condition, and can launch discussion of good vs. evil, loyalty, friendship, morality, and bravery.
