Big Dreams, Small Fish

Cohen, P.
Shirley and her family, recent immigrants to the US, open a store in their multicultural neighbourhod. Shirley has many ideas to improve the store and make more money, but she is told she is too little to help. When her family must be away from the store, Shirley gets her chance to implement her ideas – and even try to sell the gefilte fish no one wants to buy – and while her parents aren’t thrilled with her decisions, the next day brings them a big surprise. This engaging picture book, with playful text and colourful illustrations, can facilitate discussion of an immigrant family learning to live in a new community, entrepreneurship, and wanting to make things better for one’s family and community.
