When eleven-year-old Isabella’s parents divorce she is caught between two worlds: that of her rich black father and that of her white diner waitress mom. If that isn’t enough stress, she must also deal with increasing tension between her parents, a racist event at school, people’s comments about her looks, being a victim of racial profiling and being shot by the police. These struggles help Isabella to find a stronger sense of herself and pride in her identity.
