Eighteen-year-old Fergus is studying for exams, dreaming of going to England to study medicine. His older brother, a member of the IRA, is on a hunger strike in prison, causing the family intense worry. Fergus discovers a body in a bog, and becomes involved in the archaeological investigation; he falls in love with the archaeologist's daughter, and becomes friends with a Welsh border guard. Fergus is pressured to smuggle packages, and struggles through guilt and disillusionment.
