Readers meet his cantankerous yet loyal sister Queeny, his catatonic mother struggling to come to terms with life in the camp, his resourceful friend Eli, and soldiers who vigilantly guard the camp, and view issues—including lack of food, privacy, and purpose—the refugees suffer. Suitable for grades 5-9, the novel could be used as a read-aloud or novel study to explore issues of modern migration of peoples due to displacement from war or famine and how they are treated when they arrive in a new country.
