Borders

King, T.
When a mother and son take a trip to visit family in the US, it becomes complicated when they must cross the Canada-US border. When the US border guard asks the mother whether she is Canadian or American she refuses to choose either; rather, she simply tells him that she is Blackfoot. The guard will not accept this and turns them back where the Canadian border guard asks the same question which again is not accepted and the two are stuck between Canada and the US and must sleep in their car. This graphic novel version of the Thomas King story focuses on the importance of identity and belonging and can spark discussion of the purpose of laws, disobeying laws, and the concept of physical borders.
