Buffalo is the New Buffalo
A science fiction novel inspired by classic and contemporary speculative fiction, this book presents eight short stories featuring Indigenous protagonists in various imaginative contexts in alternate realities. Through these stories, readers are encouraged to think critically about the British colonization of Canada and its impacts on First Nations and Métis people. Exploring Indigenous resistance and existence, the text highlights the prejudicial beliefs around race and identity. In a secondary classroom, teachers may read this book aloud, assign it in literature circles, or use it for independent reading. The stories may allow students to connect with the struggles of the characters, and their many conflicting and harmonious points of view will invite readers to consider different perspectives.
