Canada at War

Keery, P., Wyatt, M.
Canada at War is a full-colour graphic textbook, in graphic novel style, that focuses on Canada’s role in World War II. It may appear somewhat unorthodox due to the heavy emphasis on graphics, but it will allow struggling learners/readers to use other visual skills and clues besides reading to acquire content information. And, the unorthodox format itself may make it appealing to students and hence an effective resource compared to traditional history books. Despite the limited text associated with a graphic format, details of Canada’s participation in the Allied war effort are thorough, and major battles and operations are covered. The content is clear and well presented, and summaries are provided for each topic. The images are well-defined, and artistically appealing. Stories of actual soldiers and war participants have been included to personalize the war. This graphic textbook is a quality resource for students on the subject of Canada’s role in WW II that is easily adaptable to a variety of teaching methods and student learning styles.
