Caravaggio: Signed in Blood

Smith, M.D.
Beppo, an indentured servant in 17th century Italy, witnesses his master's murder and when he is accused of the murder, Beppo flees. He happens across a duel, sees the artist Carvaggio kill an attacker and helps him get away. Carvaggio agrees to take Beppo on as an assistant, and the two flee to a different city, encountering many adventures on their way. B.C. teacher Mark Smith introduces readers to Italy during the 1600s and to Carvaggio's artistic endeavours. This engaging read will appeal to students in grades 6-8 and would work well for a class read-aloud, literature circles, or independent reading. Some social considerations noted.
