Care of: Letters, Connections, and Cures

Coyote, I.
Ivan Coyote reveals a collection of notes, letters, emails, and communications received from readers and audience members throughout the years, responding to each and shining a light on the challenges faced by transgender people who struggle with the fears of ostracism and violence. This resource provides readers with the opportunity to identify with the human experiences described within the stories and recognize the acceptance, belonging, and community Ivan offers to trans readers and listeners. In a Grade 6–12 classroom, the book lends itself well to exploring themes of identity, human rights, and intersectionality as a literature circle selection, whole-class novel, or independent reading. Teachers may also use the resource to reinforce the importance of SOJI language and study its written form or its rich use of language and characterization.
