Elva lives with her mother and brother in Victoria during the 19th century. Her father is prospecting for gold, and the family has suffered in his absence. Elva disguises herself as a boy, and with her little brother, runs away to Barkerville in hopes of bringing their father home. They have one adventure after another as they follow the Gold Rush Trail to the interior of BC. They cope with the hard conditions of the day, get kidnapped, witness a murder, and solve a mystery.
