Catherine Called Birdy

This is an ideal novel to pair with Social Studies 8 curriculum on the Middle Ages. Catherine, the 13-year-old daughter of a country knight, is resisting her father's attempts to arrange a financially beneficial marriage for her. The medieval context is well described, with specific references to life on a manor, feast days and celebrations, the feudal system and classes of people, rudimentary hygiene and medicine.
