Chains
Two young slave girls, granted freedom by their dying mistress, are nonetheless sold by the executor and taken to New York City during the Revolutionary War. Isabel, the older, can read and write, and tries desperately to gain freedom by assisting whichever side in the conflict might help her. Isabel's mistress sends her disabled little sister far away, and Isabel's outburst leads to her cheek being branded. She brings food to starving prisoners and, with one of them, escapes across the Hudson.
