Chu Ju's House

Set in rural China, where the law forbids families to have more than two children, Chu Ju’s mother gives birth to a second daughter. Faced with the reality that her new baby sister may be given up for adoption, Chu Ju decides to run away and leave her family with only one daughter – and another opportunity to try for a son. Through her struggles to find a new life, readers learn about traditional Chinese occupations and cultural beliefs, and about contemporary Chinese political issues.
