Told from the first person,the narrator Henri is an orphaned boy who is a loner. Sickly, shy and studious, he is befriended by Micah a boisterous orphan boy with a beautiful singing voice who is introduced into the abbey after being rescued by one of the friars from execution. A friendship develops between them. Meanwhile the bubonic plague comes to Paris and eventually enters the abbey. The boys and the friars form an entertaining company to bring hope and humour amidst the devastation
