Coop the Great
A contemporary story, “Coop the Great” is told from the point of view of Coop, an elderly dachshund who has been rescued from a shelter by a lonely grandfather named Mike. When Mike’s grandchildren arrive, there is real trouble that follows and Coop’s dreams of being a hero are tested as the family deals with issues such as domestic abuse, bullying, aging, and death. This novel is suitable for students in Grades 6–9 and lends itself to discussions about the choices the characters make and about having empathy for those whose lives are less fortunate. It is appropriate as a read-aloud or as a literature circle selection.
