Alan Paton
Set in South Africa in the 1940s, 'Cry, the Beloved Country' tells the story of Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom. The story follows Stephen from his countryside parish as he seeks to find his sister, who has fallen ill in Johannesburg. The city opens up an unknown world to Stephen, and he begins to see and learn of things previously unknown to him. His journey takes him in search of his wayward son, who is accused and eventually found guilty of murdering a white man.
