Day War Came, The
When the little girl awakes, starts her day with her family, and goes to school, life is normal—until the war comes in the afternoon. Everything she knows is destroyed and alone she struggles to find a place without war, but everywhere she goes she sees the war in people’s reaction to her as a refugee. Finally, she discovers a school where children are learning what she did before the war but there is no chair for her so she must leave. The next morning a boy arrives with a chair so she can attend school and through kindness hope is born. The book, with its focus on war and refugees, may be initially best suited as a read-aloud with teacher guidance due to the serious subject and possible triggers for students.
