A Day with Yayah
As grandmother, Yayah, takes her family for a day of foraging for edible plants and mushrooms in the Nicola Valley, she shares with her grandchildren her connection to the natural world and her knowledge of it. As she passes on her in-depth knowledge of the plants, she calls the plants by their Nle?kepmxcín names and thereby passes down an almost-lost language to her eager-to-learn grandchildren. This Canadian picture book, accompanied by bold, folk-like pictures, can be useful as a read-aloud to celebrate the reclamation of Indigenous languages and diversity in Canada, and to launch discussion of family, resilience, intergenerational learning, and connection with nature.
