Dealing with Name Calling
This handbook is an easy-to-use, timely, and current resource. It contains background information, strategies, and suggestions that can be used when homophobic slurs and remarks are made in a variety of school settings. The resource can be used specifically in Health and Career Education (4-9) and Planning 10, but can also be integrated into a variety of other cross-curricular studies, classroom (K-12) and community situations. The resource can also be useful to school administrators to educate staff about LGBTQ issues and what staff members can do about anti-gay bullying. Educators are given the background information necessary to help them feel more comfortable in discussing and addressing LGBTQ issues. Lesson plans include learning outcomes, vocabulary, context, activities, handouts, resources, and assessment ideas. A wide variety of instructional strategies are included. There is an extensive list of print and video resources available on the topic. Teachers should familiarize themselves with the information before proceeding to the lesson plans. The materials do encourage teachers and students to challenge and reflect on their own beliefs about gender and sexual orientation. Particularly useful is a section that gives educators suggestions for dealing with anti-gay rhetoric and anger from colleagues, parents and other community members. There is an extensive list of helpful books, videos, web sites, and workshops for students, parents and educators.
