Dodger Boy

Ellis, S.
Thirteen-year-old best friends Charlotte and Dawn make a pact to not become boy-crazy girls but when they attend an Easter Be-in they meet 19-year-old Vietnam draft dodger Tom Ed and Charlotte takes him home to stay with her family. Charlotte learns that Tom Ed and her brother are gay but Dawn thinks Tom likes her and when he leaves, Dawn runs away to be with him and Charlotte and Dawn’s relationship changes. This engaging Canadian coming-of-age story deals with friendships, sibling relationships, same-sex relationships, and male/female stereotypes, and introduces 1970s events including draft dodgers, Quakers, Easter Be-In, the draft, censorship, and the Vietnam War.
