Eagle's Path, The
When always happy and smiling Anna becomes withdrawn, her mother questions her and Anna reveals that her best friend Jill has told her that she likes girls and Anna is upset. But, when Anna is bullied for being Mohawk, Jill stands up for her and Anna feels unsure of how to act until her mother helps her understand acceptance, two-spirited people, and how to live by Eagle’s teachings of honesty, wisdom, and courage. This Canadian picture book is a good choice for a school or classroom library, individual/small group instruction, and as a class read-aloud as it introduces gender identity in a very positive manner and can launch discussion of discrimination based on gender and race, and cultural identity. Social considerations noted.
