Educate to Empower: Training of Trainers Curriculum

Riley, T. & Gacoin, A.
This engaging, accurate, and comprehensive resource manual is designed to train teachers to impart a basic awareness of HIV/AIDS and HCV(Hepatitis C Virus) and the local and global impact of HIV/AIDS, as well as investigate the social issues surrounding HIV stigma and discrimination. Although HIV/AIDS and related social issues is, for some, a sensitive topic, the resource provides teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to competently deliver the curriculum, regardless of previous training in HIV/AIDS education. Lesson plans include learning objectives, vocabulary, games, context, activities, handouts, resources, and assessment ideas. A wide variety of instructional strategies are also included. Some lesson plans, suggested media, and games will need to be adapted to suit the emotional and cognitive maturity of the students in the classroom, but one of the strengths of this resource is the ease in which lessons can be adapted for any given audience. The resource covers Health and Career Education (Grades 6-9) and Planning 10, but is not limited to these subjects; it is also useful for cross-curricular studies.
