Education of Augie Merasty, The
Joseph Auguste Merasty, a Cree trapper, was placed in a Residential School in Saskatchewan for ten years and suffered horrible physical, sexual, and emotional abuse that left him a homeless, alcoholic, and scarred adult. But, he was determined to preserve his story to ensure that nothing like the Residential School system could ever be repeated. This compelling short memoir puts faces and names to the abused and the abusers, but also mentions the few who treated the children with kindness and love. Suitable for grades 10-12, the memoir shows the resilience of Canada's First Peoples to retain their heritage and dignity despite their suffering in the Residential School system.
