Eleventh Hour, The

Goldstyn, J.
Friends Jules and Jim have always been inseparable so when World War I breaks out they both enlist. Although they have very different experiences, they both see the violence and feel despair, but when the armistice is signed, only Jules makes it home safely and struggles to find his place in the post-war world without his best friend. The text is very simple and straightforward and the illustrations bring the story to life, add emotional depth, and provide a visual representation of warfare. Suitable for grades 4-7 as a read-aloud for Remembrance Day and to prompt discussion of social responsibility, solving problems peacefully, friendship, mental health, and the treatment of veterans. The graphic illustrations may disturb some students.
