Emperor of Any Place, The
Shortly after Evan's father, Clifford, passes away, Evan discovers a small, yellow wartime diary of a Japanese soldier that his father was reading before he died that captivates Evan, and tells a story cloaked in both realism and fantasy. When Evan’s grandfather Griff arrives, he is supposedly there to help settle Clifford’s affairs, but he is really seeking the diary for his own reasons. This award-winning novel for grades 10-12 deals with the themes of interpersonal conflict and man vs. the supernatural, and would be useful as a class or independent novel study and to begin an inquiry project on WWII or the supernatural.
