Everybody's Son

Umrigar, T.
Anton, a young African American boy, is abandoned by his drug-addicted mother, and is put in foster care with David, a rich white judge who uses his power unethically to keep Anton away from his mother at all cost, and his wife Delores. The story follows Anton from age 9 to his mid-30s, and details his struggle with his identity, his eventual acceptance of his new privileged life and education, and the crisis that occurs when Anton learns the truth about his life. Suitable for literature circles and whole class study in grades 9-12, this timely novel deals with difficult issues of identity, forgiveness, honesty, corruption, race, privilege, and class.
