This WWII novel focuses on Mary, who volunteers for the war effort, is insulted to be given a teaching position, and challenges many of the social conventions of the era, Tom, her superior, with whom she falls in love, and Alistair, Tom’s best friend. As the war progresses the relationship among them becomes complicated and they struggle with their choices, forced upon them by the war. Students can explore what it means to be human and to be loved, bravery and courage, and the role of loyalty in love and friendship.
