Eyes That Speak to the Stars

Ho, J.
A young boy is saddened when a friend draws a hurtful drawing with lines for his eyes. He turns to his family for comfort and comes to realize the history and culture that his eyes represent and feels empowered and connected to his ancestors. The story’s simple yet poetic language makes it accessible for students across the elementary grades. In the classroom, teachers may use the book to address diversity and anti-racism in our communities. It may also offer a segue into a unit about cultural diversity or an exploration of the Chinese culture or invite research into other ones.
