Fauja Singh, born with a disability, did not walk until he was five, and being small and weak he was teased by other children, and was unable to walk to school. Despite everything he persevered and walked further and further and worked successfully as a farmer. At age 81 he took up running and entered marathons, being the oldest man in the world to run a marathon, and he shared his culture through his running. His inspirational story shows how a determined person can be successful and overcome adversity, and demonstrates courage and ways to share one’s culture. Suitable as read-aloud to discuss anti-racism, perseverance, growth mindset, multiculturalism, and self-identity.
