Field Guide to the North American Teenager, The
When Black French-Canadian high school student Norris must move to Austin, Texas when his mom accepts a new job, he tries to find his way in a very different society and town that he hates. He hides behind sarcasm and wit and starts a journal—a field guide—to stereotype his classmates, but despite his pessimism he makes some good friends and learns to fit in to his new environment. This contemporary novel is easily accessible and relatable, and is suitable for a literature circle on, and class discussions of, topical issues of race relations, anti-racism, identity, immigration, police brutality, and Black Lives Matter. Social considerations noted.
