Fire Starters
When two indigenous youth find an old flare gun and decide to have some fun, they are accused by the sheriff’s son of setting a fire at the local gas station. As this graphic novel unfolds, the true culprit is discovered and the novel concludes with restorative justice for the offender. This engaging graphic novel, with appealing and dynamic visuals, examines the underlying prejudice of a small Canadian town. Suited as a class novel to launch discussion of issues of race, responsibility, doing the right thing, and restorative justice, it could equally work well for a literature circle or independent novel choice for grades 9-12.
