Flight of the Hummingbird: A Parable for the Environment

Yahgulanaas, M. N.
This First Nations parable of the hummingbird is written as a legend and illustrated in Haida style with black, red, and white drawings. The wording is simple enough for even young students to understand. Other sections of the book explain why the hummingbird is a symbol of sustainability, and include comments on environmental issues from the Dalai Lama and the author. The distinct parts allow the book to be used with students of varying ages, from K-9. Useful as a read-aloud or independent reading, to introduce Haida art, and to launch discussion of First Nations legends and parables, the environment and sustainability, and determination and perseverance.
