Ghost Hawk

Cooper, S.
Little Hawk journeys to the wilderness to survive alone and become a man. After three months and harrowing experiences, he returns home to find his tribe ravaged by disease and life greatly affected by white settlers. When Little Hawk is shot dead while delivering a message, the story is then told by John, a young apprentice. The novel, for grades 4-8, offers different perspectives of colonization, provides information of the Aboriginal experience prior to settlement, and presents attitudes the colonists have about First Peoples. Useful for read-aloud, literature circle, or independent study, it can launch discussion of racism, religion, cultural beliefs, and the impact of colonization.
