When Mali is berry picking her treasured hair clip, made by her grandmother, disappears. Her mom thinks she lost it, but Mali knows it was stolen by one of the little people. When Mali sees Puug, a little person, wearing her hair clip she says she wants it back and Puug agrees if Mali will help him collect a number of items to preserve the memories of the items. The two go on a scary adventure to an abandoned residential school to collect the last item and on the way must escape a terrifying giant. This graphic novel, based on Mi’kmaq stories, can be useful as a supplemental text in grade 3-7 classrooms, as a literature circle book to facilitate small group discussions with the teacher, and for independent reading. Social considerations noted.
