Girl From the Sea, The
This graphic novel incorporates a contemporary theme that includes rich characterization and points of view. It follows the story of fifteen-year-old Morgan, who is carrying a secret that she is not ready to publicly share—that she is gay. But once she meets someone who accepts her for who she is, she begins to learn not to be ashamed. This story is about friendship, family, and relationships. It is a coming-of-age story of young love and the struggles that come along with it. In a middle-school classroom, this resource lends itself well as a book choice for supporting the 2SLGBTQAI+ community and teaching SOGI-related lessons, allowing opportunities for discussions about gender identity, sexual orientation, and healthy relationships. It is suitable for literature circles, and it may be used to inspire an extended writing activity.
