Habo, born in Africa with albinism, stands out in his community and is treated differently, and his family tries to shelter him, but when they are forced to leave their farm and make a long trek across the Serengeti, Habo learns the extent of cruelty to albinos as they are hunted and sold for body parts. When he is attacked he must abandon his family and head to Dar es Salaam on his own, where people with albinism are safe. This novel introduces important issues of self-discovery, identity, compassion, perseverance, resilience, self-acceptance, and survival and is relatable for students in grades 9-12. Social considerations noted.
