Golden Compass, The

With wonderful description and imagery, this novel (first in a trilogy) is a page-turner that would appeal to both boys and girls, even though the main character is an 11-year-old girl. Lyra struggles with two separate and competing parents in an attempt to discover why children are being stolen. Later, she tries to bring them home.
