Fifth-grader Rufus desperately wants a dog but his father is clear that they are not going to get one. When Rufus's mother brings home a guinea pig as a concession to both of them, it pleases neither Rufus nor his father, but the guinea pig worms her way into the hearts of father and son, and even Rufus’ friends admire his unusual pet that acts like a dog.
