Harbor Me
When six middle-school students start to meet regularly just to talk, they soon discover that this group is their safe place—their harbour. They learn to listen and support each other as they discuss their problems, preserving memories and fostering empathy, regardless of their different backgrounds. In an intermediate classroom, “Harbor Me” is a relatable story that may inspire discussions on social justice issues, in particular, related to racial profiling, bullying, classism, and incarceration. The novel may also encourage students to create their own stories, art projects, and reflections on the injustices they have experienced in their own lives.
