Virgil, a shy middle-school student, is on his way to visit his friend Kaori, to seek advice on how to approach Valencia, a deaf classmate who he likes. But, he is confronted by Chet “the Bull” in the woods, and Kaori and Valencia work together to rescue Virgil. The story highlights conflict arising from family dynamics, middle-school relationships, bullying, and coping in the world with a hearing impairment. The themes of survival, friendship, and overcoming obstacles are well-developed. Four main characters take turns narrating chapters. Suitable for grades 5-8.
