Heroine
When seventeen-year-old Mindy, an elite athlete, is injured in a car accident she becomes addicted to pain medication which leads to heroin use. When her drug habit overtakes her relationships and her ability to perform as an athlete, she suffers an identity crisis and her final breakdown is sparked by some peers overdosing. Ultimately, Mindy discovers redemption, a promise of healing, and rehabilitation. This authentic treatment of the current drug crisis can be used for independent novel study with teacher facilitation and excerpts or selections can be used to demonstrate the risk of increasing drug use. Due to the controversial and dangerous nature of the content, teacher pre-reading needed, and consideration given to the emotional maturity and cognitive level of students.
