Hidden Figures

Shetterly, M.L.
This compelling non-fiction book tells of a team of black female mathematicians who work as “human computers” for NASA during WWII and the Space Race and who had a significant role in some of NASA’s biggest missions. At a time when racism and segregation were rampant in the South, black men and women were able to be employed at NASA where talent and intellect were valued over racial stereotypes, and they achieved remarkable success. Suitable for grade 10-12 students, the book is rich with historical details from the WWII and Cold War era and could complement Socials Studies and Writing classes.
