Onomé, L.
Sixteen-year-old Nelo and her best friend Kate live in a low-income neighbourhood near Toronto. When vandalism and violence affect the community, big box stores start to move in, and redevelopment begins Nelo struggles with the changes happening around her and becomes frustrated that people – including Kate – don’t appear to see what’s happening to their neighbourhood and won’t do anything to stop it. This engaging novel explores issues of gentrification, rent increases, economic inequality, the impact of change, and standing up for what one believes in that are relevant today in communities throughout Canada. Suitable for a full-class or literature circle text for grades 9-12.
