Homes: A Refugee Story

Ten-year-old Abu Bakr and his family move from Iraq to Syria to escape the danger and violence facing Sunni Muslims, but shortly after they arrive in Syria the civil war breaks out and his life is a perplexing mix of everyday family joys and survival in a place of escalating violence. The family eventually moves to Edmonton and teenager Abu Bakr describes his life growing up in Syria and Iraq, the inherent complexities of being a refugee, and the challenges of making a new life in the Prairies. This memoir provides students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to experience the many struggles refugees face and learn about cultures, traditions, and tensions in the Middle East.
