I Sang You Down From the Stars

Spillett-Sumner, T.
Drawing from Indigenous creation stories and traditional teachings, this story is an homage to the special bond between mother and child, emphasizing the gifts a child brings into the world. The book highlights the importance of land, culture, family, and identity with simple, lyrical text and lush imagery. Suitable in a K–12 classroom, students may be encouraged to reflect on First Peoples Principles of Learning elements in this Indigenous story. Teachers may choose to read the book aloud and invite class discussions, allowing students to share the connections they make to the story. The artwork of Michaela Goade, a Caldecott winner, may also be explored.
